Honey Singh's concert cancelled after protests

VADODARA: Following protests by a city-based group, the performance of famed Punjabi rapperand singer, Honey Singh has been cancelled. Singh was to perform at a farmhouse in the city on June 2. Excitement was palpable for the visit of the controversial singer who faced lot of criticism for his songs that allegedly depicted violence against women and rape positively.

However, a little-known Sardar Patel Groupbegan protests against Singh's concert stating that he disrespects women. Members of National Students Union of India (NSUI) also held protests against the show and burnt Singh's posters. The posters announcing his visit too were tore down from different areas.

"The police didn't give no-objection certificate for the programme and hence we didn't give necessary permissions," said district collector Vinod Rao.

The police have refused to give permissions for the event citing law and order issues after protests erupted against the singer. The S P Group had earlier met Rao and police officials and urged them to not give permissions for the show. Some of those opposing the show even approached the court to bring stay on the show. An NGO working for women's rights too had opposed the show.

After the Delhi gang rape that shook the nation last year, Singh got mired in controversy over lyrics of his some songs that allegedly insulted women.

An FIR was registered against him over the alleged vulgar songs and his show at a hotel on the New Year Eve, too, was cancelled last year.

Framing laws on obscenity beyond state, Punjab tells HC

CHANDIGARH: Punjab government has washed its hands of the issue of evolving an effective mechanism to curb the menace of vulgar songs.

The government has submitted before the Punjab and Haryana high court that the policy to curb the growing menace of obscene and lewd Punjabi songs is beyond the "territorial jurisdiction of state".

Instead, the affidavit, a copy of which is with the TOI, has categorically put the onus on the Central government to regulate the obscene songs, citing prevalence of songs on the Internet.

"The Punjabi songs are not only popular in the state but are also popular worldwide and on many occasions are recorded outside the state and are uploaded on the internet or Facebook. It is decided that for an effective control, the government of India may be impleaded as a necessary party to the present petition," the affidavit, which was submitted on April 25, said.

The matter had reached the HC through a PIL filed by an NGO, Human Empowerment League Punjab (HELP), of Nawanshahar district, seeking directions to set up some effective mechanism, such as setting up of some censor board or framing some other policy for curbing the menace of vulgar songs from Punjab.

The petitioner had referred to a news report published in TOI for bringing home the fact as to how vulgar songs are being recorded and played by certain Punjabi singers.

A specific reference was made to a song "Main Hoon Balatkari" sung by Honey Singh. On April 26, the division bench of the court had directed the singer to appear in the court on May 14 to respond to the allegations against him for singing a lewd song.

The affidavit, further says, that a consensus on "what is obscene needs to be arrived at national level".

The petition, which had been accepted by the HC, had cited Section 294 of Indian Penal code, according to which singing of lewd/obscene songs at public places is an offence.

It further stated that women have the right to protect their dignity, as a facet of their fundamental right of "right to life", and such fundamental right to dignity of human being womanhood, cannot be violated under the garb of "right to freedom of speech".

The Punjab government, however, said the IPC section "may not be effective against playing, recording or uploading obscene songs/acts on the internet".

Punjab and Haryana High court summons Honey Singh

The Punjab and Haryana High court has directed singer and rapper Honey Singh to appear in court on May 14 to respond to allegations against him of singing vulgar songs, especially the infamous number, 'Main Hoon Balatkaari', in a public interest litigation.

This PIL was filed in court by an NGO, HELP, subsequent to a group of singers and musicians protesting against 'vulgar, lewd and indecent' lyrics of some Punjabi singers, referring to them as 'a corrupting influence on Punjabi music'.

The other singers who were named in the PIL included Diljit Dosanjh, who gave the hit song Pee Pa in the Riteish-Genelia starrer Tere Naal Love Ho Gya, and Gippy Grewal, who rendered Angreji Beat with Honey for the film Cocktail.

Honey Singh's troubles first started when his New Year's show in Gurgaon was cancelled following protests of his lyrics being vulgar and misogynist in the wake of the Nirbhaya murder case.

Honey Singh and his representatives did not respond when we tried to contact them.

The court, on the other hand, expressed disappointment over the matter. The bench comprising acting chief justice Jasbir Singh and Rakesh Kumar Jain heard the case and asked the petitioner's advocate as to what kind of a singer Honey Singh is, and labelled the songs indecent.

Also, the petitioner pointed out that despite a formal complaint, the Punjab government did not initiate any step in this regard.

When contacted Parvinder Singh Kitna, general secretary of HELP, said, "The main idea behind moving a complaint was to stop all this. The singers have forgotten their limits and are showing no respect towards women."

I want to ensure I'm not a one-film wonder: Anirudh

After Kolaveri happened, life has been like a catapult, really, and not like a step-by-step climb. But, I wanted to ensure that I wasn't a one-film wonder and worked hard on my second album, Ethir Neechal, which is doing well now. At 21, I can't ask for more. I wanted to taste this kind of success at 25 but I'm happy and grateful to God to have showered it to me so early in my career.

How did composing for films happen?
3 was actually a short film for which I'd scored music. Those days, Dhanush kept saying that I'll make it big someday — but I thought he was pulling my leg! When he wanted me to compose music for the film, I was just 19 and in my final year of college. The offer was sudden and unexpected — just like the success.

The songs you've sung are also doing well...
Singing doesn't come naturally to me. As a composer, I record all my scratch tracks and sometimes, directors like the voice and so, decide to retain it.

So, how do you zero in on a singer for a particular tune?
When I'm composing a song, I have the singer in mind. For instance, for my next album Vanakkam Chennai, I tuned a song keeping in mind Ayushmann Khurrana's voice. I called him and fortunately, he agreed to sing immediately! That album, which I personally feel is my best till date, will also feature a song by Hard Kaur and Yo Yo Honey Singh.

RICH 4 EVER
